Klimmen in Berdorf: chaos, regen en onze RainyDays shoot
Share

Berdorf is known as the largest and most famous climbing area in Luxembourg. The Wanterbaach-massif offers roughly 170 to 200 routes, set in a fairytale forest with impressive sandstone towers. The compact and unique sandstone creates technical and often long sport routes, some reaching up to 36 meters. Most routes fall in the 6a to 7c grades, with a few outliers from 3 to 8c.
Climbers from all over Europe gather here to push their limits.
For us at RainyDays Sportswear — climbing apparel by women, for women, this was the perfect place to test and capture our new fall/winter collection.
Day 1: The adventure begins
A tightly planned departure day, of course, went differently than expected. Forgotten climbing ropes, a tent that turned out to have a bent pole upon arrival… In short: chaos. But hey, that’s part of it. After some improvisation the tent was up (crooked but dry!), and we kicked off the evening by trying on the collection. The enthusiastic reactions from Nele and Matti gave us an instant energy boost for the days ahead.

Day 2: Shoot day — between rock and camera
At 9:00 a.m. we were in the car: climbing gear, cameras, RainyDays outfits and an overload of energy. Soon we stood among massive rock walls and climbers of all levels: from 6b to 8a. My role that day? Taking photos everywhere, handing out snacks, making sure hair and outfits were on point, enjoying a crumble cake and watching the climbers with admiration. The community vibe is fantastic: climbers of all ages and countries, all searching for their limit and for shared joy in nature.
Nele and Matti warmed up on routes that make you tired just watching, and the shoot turned into a lovely blend of training, posing and lots of laughter. Hikers and other climbers stopped curiously to watch: “What are those girls doing? Is this a campaign?” — and yes, proudly I could say we were working on the new RainyDays collection.
Meanwhile, Thibaut managed to capture spectacular shots from every possible angle. Sometimes hanging in a rope, sometimes from the ground. Safety, fun and creativity kept taking turns.
Practical: Most routes in Berdorf require a 60 m rope, but for the longest lines a 70 m is recommended. At least 16 quickdraws are useful.
Day 3: Rain, sport and creativity
On the last day, the weather threw a wrench in the works: rain. But no reason to panic — we headed into the woods, looked for dry rock and made the best of it. In fact, these conditions may have delivered the most beautiful photos: powerful positions against a wet wall, with the steamy air and the intensity of the moment captured perfectly.
Our fleece and leggings proved their value: staying warm while you wait your turn, and dry enough to keep going. Exactly as we intended.

Practical: The best climbing season in Berdorf runs from April to October. After rain, the sandstone needs sufficient time to dry — climbing on wet rock is dangerous and damaging.
Tired, fulfilled and proud
After two days of climbing, improvising and shooting, we returned home tired but incredibly satisfied. A week later the photos came in, and I’m thrilled with the result. The collection looks stunning — but more importantly, the images breathe exactly what RainyDays stands for: having fun, being in the moment and embracing adventure.
Tips & Tricks for climbing in Berdorf
- Best season: spring to autumn; in summer it stays cool under the trees.
- Drying time: sandstone dries slowly — respect that to avoid breakage.
- Clean shoe soles before every attempt: grit damages the rock and costs you grip.
- Use chalk sparingly: and brush the holds afterwards.
- Weekdays = quieter: weekends are popular with foreign climbers.
- Family-friendly: 10–15 minutes of approach on flat trails.
- Topos: download in advance via the 27Crags app.
RainyDays: by women, for women
What did this shoot teach us? You can’t plan adventure. You might forget tent poles, get soaked and drive home tired, but that only makes the experience richer.
At RainyDays Sportswear we design climbing apparel that supports that adventure. Comfortable, durable and created from our own experience as women who climb.
Add Berdorf to your list, put on your RainyDays gear and discover why climbing in Luxembourg is so much more than just ticking routes. It’s community, nature and adventure — exactly what we stand for.
